HPO

Hydrogen peroxide ranks up there as one of the best household remedies.
Besides the obvious (cleansing wounds), did you know that it is probably the best remedy to dissolve earwax? Yep, and it is used around the world to prevent the flu. Athletes also use hydrogen peroxide to build stamina. Additionally, we have received several emailed reports that hydrogen peroxide has cured melanoma, prostate and mesothelioma (asbestos) cancer.

As you will read below, there are quite a few ways that our readers report taking hydrogen peroxide. Some folks put a few drops of food grade (35%) peroxide in water and drink it. Others are big fans of 3% drugstore peroxide -- they bathe in it; splash it on their skin; add it to a sterilized nasal pump and inhale it through the mouth and into the lungs; or soak it in the ears for a few minutes to get rid of viruses. We'll leave it up to you to decide how you want to try it.
Note: Regular bottles of 3% hydrogen peroxide (bought at any drugstore for under $1) is the type of peroxide most commonly referred to below from our readers for the ears. The only grade recommended for internal use is 35% Food Grade Hydrogen Peroxide, which must be properly diluted down to 3% with water.

COLDS AND FLU:
It is reportedly a common practice in India and Germany... During flu season, fill the cap of a bottle of hydrogen peroxide with the liquid, lay down on your side, and pour it into one ear. After a few seconds, the liquid will bubble. Lay with the peroxide fizzing for 5 or 10 minutes, then shake the peroxide out. Repeat on the other ear. This remedy is supposed to cures colds that are already in progress - causing the symptoms to begin to clear up within a few hours. Note: If the virus has been in your blood for some time, this will not work!

HYDROGEN PEROXIDE'S HISTORY:
Ted from Bangkok writes, "Yes, the pharmaceuticals are threatened by hydrogen peroxide cures! Last time, about 120 years ago (during the reign of Queen Victoria), people in India (a British colony then) found that Hydrogen peroxide added in small amounts to drinking water cured a variety of sickness especially colds, flu, cholera, malaria, etc. It threatened the British monopoly drug sales, so they issued fake news by hiring a news reporter disguised as a doctor to put out the information to the effect that taking hydrogen peroxide causes viral brain damage. It sounded believable, but the child who died of the hydrogen peroxide caused viral brain damage was non-existent.
It worked and the people in India went to buying British drugs, while suppressing India's own Ayurvedic medicine from any sales. It is amazing that Ayurvedic medicine actually survived under British threat for more than 200 years of occupation!
It has happened during the Queen Victoria era, and now it is happening again. History repeats itself, only this time, we now have the internet, which at least for now, the information is free. No doubt, freedom of information is something we just have to always be vigilant and fight for."

EARTH CLINIC REPORT:
11/21/2006: True enough, if a $.79 home remedy jeopardizes the multi-billion dollar pharmaceutical and medical industries, there will be an effort to squash it as either dangerous, ineffective, or both. Since July (when we started to receive anti-H202 emails), more articles are appearing on the Internet and in magazines about the dangers and ineffectiveness of drinking hydrogen peroxide as reported by the FDA. The latest article we just read came from Consumer Reports, December 2006, page 53. They devote an entire column to the dangers of hydrogen peroxide. The title: "Safety Alert: Hydrogen PeroxideIsn’t for Drinking". The article references several websites promoting H202 as a cure for cancer. No doubt the author came to this page too!

To quote from the article: "The idea behind ingesting hydrogen peroxide stems from a now-discredited theory that cancer and AIDS thrive on a lack of oxygen in the body."
Ummmm, discredited by what studies? Show us!

According to the FDA, when taken orally H202 might cause gastrointestinal irritation or ulcers. Hey, so does ibuprofen, which also causes acid reflux in people. We seriously doubt there are many people foolish enough to swallow large quantities of peroxide and suffer these purported side effects. (The standard dosage for food grade peroxide is 3-4 drops per 8 oz of distilled water.) If there are indeed people suffering side effects from these minute dosages, we'd like to see the reports.

Department of Emergency Medicine, Chonnam National University Hwasun Hospital and Chonnam Medical School, Gwangju, South Korea.
It is well known that ingestion of low concentrations of hydrogen peroxide is usually nontoxic; this does not produce gas embolism and is only a mild irritant to the gastrointestinal tract. We report the case of a 25-year-old woman who ingested one mouthful of 3% hydrogen peroxide and presented to the Emergency Department with persistent vomiting and epigastric pain. The radiographic evaluation found portal venous gas emboli. In addition, upper gastrointestinal endoscopy performed 2 h after ingestion revealed diffuse hemorrhagic gastritis. She showed a decrease of hemoglobin concentration and a positive test result for occult blood in stool. She was observed for 14 days & discharged. Follow-up endoscopy showed erythematous gastritis. This case illustrates that a low concentration of hydrogen peroxide can cause portal venous gas embolism and severe gastrointestinal injuries even if only a small amount is ingested."

4/2/2007: Ted from Bangkok writes, "No one uses 1% concentration for internal purposes either. So 3% is way beyond that.
In the alternative health field, the maximum is actually 0.5% concentration. Actually and optimum H2O2 concentration was first determined in 1950s by Dr. Reginald Holman by implanting Walker 256 adenocarcinoma tumours. The drinking water for the rat used H2O2 optimum concentration needed to kill the tumors was about 0.45 percent.
Tumours completely disappeared in 15 to 60 days in rats. Of course a better way is to add 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda in the glass of 0.45% concentration of H2O2. This can be extended to treatment of almost any kinds of conditions, from virus, bacteria, microbial infections, pneumonia, tuberculosis, flu, etc. My own experience of using just baking soda (also increases the body's oxygen) and ascorbate vitamin C about three weeks for a small tumor to go into remission.
A more effective I think in the future of peroxide therapy is to add baking soda to the 0.45% concentration to normal drinking water since baking soda is alkaline and increases oxygen, while the peroxide furthers this natural increase. Ted"

CHECKING FOR STABILIZERS IN H202
Ted from Bangkok writes, "There is a simple way to see if Hydrogen Peroxide contains stabilizers: Pour 1/2 cap of hydrogen peroxide in a glass of water. If the color has yellow (or other off colors), it has a stabilizer. It is best to set it out in the sun where it is easier to see. If the H202 remains colorless when mixed in a glass of water, it usually does not have a stabilizer.
Almost all H2O2 sold in drug stores will have stabilizers, actually to discourage people to use them internally. So you can use this as a way to compare them. Basically, H2O2 poured into a clean glass and left out in a sun covered by a dish should not have air bubbles. If it does, there are metal contaminants. If you are asking for trouble, a drop of ammonia solution in H2O2 mixed in water will cause a rapid air bubble generation. It is unstable if it has stabilizers. You can try the experiment and compare the results.

The test for this is not perfect one, but the key is the color, even when you add just a small amount of water in direct sunlight. Also, a good quality H2O2 doesn't get small bubbles during storage.

By the way, an easy way to test the quality of your drinking water is to add 10% of 3% H2O2 to 90% Water and perform the test by noticing air bubbles. If there are a lot of air bubbles for the next 6 hours, then the water has either too much organic residues OR heavy metals. During the test please keep in places AWAY from children. After the test immediately discard the contents into the sink. Ted"
09/14/2007: Ron from Temiskaming Shores, Canada writes: "Great site. I wanted to put my 2 cents in about Hydrogen Pyroxide (HP). I went to Wal-Mart to purchase some HP and when I got it home I noticed that my bottle of HP had the skull and cross bones on the front of it. Yikes!! The lable reads "POISON" because this particular brand contains stabilizers. The previous brand that I bought did not have stablizers in it and did not have the skull and cross bones symbol on the front. I don’t think I want to try to ingest the poison type of HP. I think readers should be made aware that there is a difference and to be careful when buying HP, to make sure they find one without stablizers."
09/17/2007: Ted from Bangkok replies, "Remedies require food grade H2O2 except in instances of external use. H2O2 can't be labelled poison if it is for external use (as in antiseptics) since other contact poisons go directly through the skin killing you. Stabilizers can't do this. Most labeling no longer use the skull and bones, at least not on H2O2, since they often more cause skin burns if used in high concentration and are classified as caustic solutions. Even hydrochloric acid might also be considered a poison, but our stomach produce plenty of it. I don't think labels are consistent in classifying it"

*** HYDROGEN PEROXIDE NO LONGER RECOMMENDED FOR WOUND CARE ***
2/15/2008: Dawn (R. N.) from Allen, Texas writes: "Hydrogen peroxide was once used for cleaning wounds but research has shown it is too harsh for wound care. It kills healthy tissue, is cytotoxic, and actually delays wound healing. Unfortunately, some health professionals have not kept current on changes in wound care and still recommend H2O2. I cannot comment on the other clains on your page, but H2O2 for wound care is definitely inappropriate."

FOOD GRADE WARNINGS:
04/18/2006: John from Sault Ste Marie, MI writes, "I'd be very wary of recommending that anyone use 35% hydrogen peroxide unless they've had HAZMAT training or the equivalent. At that concentration H2O2 is extremely corrosive and causes severe burns; in other words, it's a very hazardous chemical that even professional chemists (and I am one) must handle using appropriate safety equipment (rubber gloves, safety goggles, protective lab coat). I know this from experience because I was badly burned by 35% H2O2 while carrying out chemistry research. It's irresponsible to imply that this stuff is harmless and to recommend it to people who have no experience handling hazardous materials."

04/10/2009: David from Tampa, FL writes, "I have used food grade H2O for years and if you do spill it on yourself just rinse with water for a few minutes - it will turn your skin white and it is temporary and there is no prolonged damage. Yes, you do have to be careful but not afraid."

EARTH CLINIC'S ADDITIONAL WARNING NOTE:
Please be very careful when transporting food grade hydrogen peroxide after the bottle has been opened. Make sure you keep the bottle upright. Once the seal has been removed upon opening, these caps can leak. Food grade will cause the skin to burn and turn white. Yes, we learned the hard way! Luckily, skin will return to normal after 30 minutes or less if you rinse off the peroxide quickly. By the way, the same whitening of skin effect happens when you dip your fingertips in drugstore 3% H202 for a minute or more. It too goes away within 30 minutes...

STORING FOOD GRADE H202
9/2/2007: Jake from Chicago, Il writes: "Sara in Atlanta said she stores 35% H2O2 in the freezer. In one manufacturer's write up this is specifically warned against lest it break down. Storage is recommended in a dark cool place like the refrigerator where the loss of potency per year is minor - according to them about 1% or so per year."

Grades of Hydrogen Peroxide
Hydrogen peroxide is available in various strengths and grades.
A) 3.5% Pharmaceutical Grade: This is the grade sold at your local drugstore or supermarket. This product is not recommended for internal use. It contains an assortment of stabilizers which shouldn't be ingested. Various stabilizers include: acetanilide, phenol, sodium stanate and tertrasodium phosphate.

B) 6% Beautician Grade: This is used in beauty shops to color hair and is not recommended for internal use.
C) 30% Reagent Grade: This is used for various scientific experimentation and also contains stabilizers. It is also not for internal use.
D) 30% to 32% Electronic Grade: This is used to clean electronic parts and not for internal use.
E) 35% Technical Grade: This is a more concentrated product than the Reagent Grade and differs slightly in that phosphorus is added to help neutralize any chlorine from the water used to dilute it.
F) 35% Food Grade: This is used in the production of foods like cheese, eggs, and whey-containing products. It is also sprayed on the foil lining of aseptic packages containing fruit juices and milk products. THIS IS THE ONLY GRADE RECOMMENDED FOR INTERNAL USE. It is available in pints, quarts, gallons or even drums. Various suppliers are mentioned later in this article.
G) 90%: This is used as an oxygen source for rocket fuel.

Only 35% Food Grade hydrogen peroxide is recommended for internal use. At this concentration, however, hydrogen peroxide is a very strong oxidizer and if not diluted, it can be extremely dangerous or even fatal. Any concentrations over 10% can cause neurological reactions and damage to the upper gastrointestinal tract. There have been two known fatalities in children who ingested 27% and 40% concentrations of H202. Recently, a 26 month old female swallowed one mouthful of 35% H202. She immediately began vomiting, followed by fainting and respiratory arrest. Fortunately, she was under emergency room care and although she experienced erosion and bleeding of the stomach and esophagus, she survived the incident. When she was re-examined 12 days later, the areas involved had healed (J Toxicol Clin Toxicol 90;28(1):95-100).
35% Food Grade H202 must be
1) handled carefully (direct contact will burn the skin--immediate flushing with water is recommended).
2) diluted properly before use. 3) stored safely and properly (after making a dilution the remainder should be stored tightly sealed in the freezer).

One of the most convenient methods of dispensing 35% H202 is from a small glass eye dropper bottle. These can be purchased at your local drugstore. Fill this with the 35% H202 and store the larger container in the freezer compartment of your refrigerator until more is needed. Store the eye dropper bottle in the refrigerator. The generally recommended dosage is outlined in the chart below. The drops are mixed with either 6 to 8 ounces of distilled water, juice, milk or even aloe vera juice or gel. (Don't use chlorinated tap water to dilute the peroxide!)

Suggested Protocol
The program outlined is only a suggestion, but it is based on years of experience, and reports from thousands of users. Those who choose to go at a slower pace can expect to progress more slowly, but that certainly is an option. The program is not carved in stone and keep in mind that it can be adapted to fit individual needs. Individuals who have had transplants should not undertake an H202 program. H202 stimulates the immune system and could possibly cause a rejection of the organ.

Maintenance Dosage
In most situations after the above 21 day program, the amount of H202 can be tapered off gradually as follows:
25 drops once every other day for 1 week
25 drops once every third day for 2 weeks
25 drops once every fourth day for 3 weeks

This can then be reduced to between 5 and 15 drops per week based on how one feels. Those with more serious problems will often benefit from staying on 25 drops three times a day for one to three weeks, then tapering down to 25 drops two times daily until the problem is resolved (possibly as long as six months). Those with chronic systemic Candidiasis may need to start with 1 drop three times a day, then 2 drops three times a day before starting the above schedule. It is important that H202 be taken on an empty stomach. This is best accomplished by taking it either one hour before meals or three hours after meals. If there is food in the stomach, the reaction of H202 on any bacteria present may cause excess foaming, indigestion, and possibly even vomiting. Additionally, some animal research indicates that when H202 given orally combines with iron and small amounts of vitamin C in the stomach, hydroxyl radicals are created (J Inorg Biochem 89;35(1):55-69). The bleach-like aftertaste of H202 can be lessened by chewing one of the sugar-free cinnamon gums. Some individuals taking H202 immediately before bedtime have a difficult time getting to sleep. This is probably due to a sense of alertness triggered by an increase of oxygen at the cellular level. The oral dosage schedule is basically the same for all conditions. There are several points to keep in mind, however.

Some individuals may experience upset stomach. If this occurs it is recommended that one not stop the program, but rather remain at the current dosage level or reduce it to the previous level until the problem stops. (Some patients have been able to solve the nausea problem by taking three or four lecithin capsules at the same time they take the H202.) During the program it's not uncommon to experience what is known as a healing crisis. As dead bacteria and toxins are released from your body it may temporarily exceed your capacity to eliminate them quickly enough. In some individuals this overload may cause fatigue, diarrhea, headaches, skin eruptions, cold or flu-like symptoms, and/or nausea. One should not discontinue using the peroxide to stop this cleansing. By continuing the program, toxins will clear the body sooner and this healing crisis will pass rather quickly.

If you are not already taking vitamin E and an acidophilus product, I recommend starting them before going on H202. Vitamin E can make more efficient use of any oxygen available and acidophilus will help re-establish the beneficial bacterial flora in the lower bowel and also help in the internal production of hydrogen peroxide.

Making and Using 3% Solutions of H202
A 3.5% solution can be made quite easily by first pouring 1 ounce of 35% H202 into a pint jar. To this add 11 ounces of distilled water. This will make 12 ounces of 3.5% H202. 3.5% H202 has a variety of medicinal uses.
1. Three tablespoons mixed with a quart of non-chlorinated water makes a good enema or douche formula.
2. It can be used full strength as a mouthwash or mixed with baking soda for toothpaste.
3. It can be used full strength as a foot bath for athlete's foot. (Diabetics have found relief from circulation problems by soaking their feet in 1 pint of 3% peroxide mixed with 1 gallon of warm, non-chlorinated water for 30 minutes nightly.)
4. A tablespoon added to 1 cup of non-chlorinated water can be used as a nasal spray. Depending on the degree of sinus involvement, one will have to adjust the amount of peroxide used. I have seen some who can use it at the full 3% strength and others who had difficulty with using a few drops and mixed with a cup of water.
5. 3.5% H202 can be added to pets drinking water at the rate of 1 ounce per quart of non-chlorinated water. Sick cattle reportedly benefit from 1 pint (of 3%) to each 5 gallons of water. (Chickens and cows have remained healthy by using 8 ounces of 35% H202 per 1,000 gallons of drinking water.)
Additional Information
There are two sources you should contact if you have an interest in using hydrogen peroxide therapy. The first, ECHO, was founded by Father Richard Willhelm and is run by Walter Grotz. Their information packet includes a sample newsletter, a list of H202 distributors and several other items. The packet is being made available to interested ALTERNATIVES readers for only $3. Their address is
ECHO Box 126
Delano, MN 55328
If you have an interest in contacting doctors who provide intravenous hydrogen peroxide therapy you can write to the International Bio-Oxidative Medicine Foundation (IBOM) at the address listed earlier in this article. You should also be aware that there are now numerous hydrogen peroxide products on the market. Some are simply peroxide that has been flavored and mixed with sea minerals, aloe vera, inner tree bark or other ingredients to make the peroxide more palatable (Superoxy, Oxy Toddy, etc.).
Others claim to have developed products that deliver more oxygen than does simple hydrogen peroxide (Aerox, Anti-Oxid-10, Di-Oxychloride, Aerobic 07, Aqua Pure, etc.). Basically you'll end up paying a small fortune and at best achieving the same results you can get for pennies by using hydrogen peroxide.
Conclusion
Hydrogen peroxide is one of the few simple miracle substances still available to the public. Its safety and multiple uses ranks it right up there with DMSO. If you've never used either of these compounds you are overlooking two of the most powerful healing tools ever discovered. Most of us started on hydrogen peroxide shortly after birth. Not only does mother's milk contain high amounts of H202, the amount contained in the first milk (colostrum) is even higher. This seems only reasonable now that we know one of its main functions is to activate and stimulate the immune system. Although I am a strong supporter of H202 therapy, I am not suggesting that everyone needs to be using it. There are probably some individuals whose health and well being would not be enhanced with hydrogen peroxide. But there are also millions of others who are suffering needlessly because they either do not know about hydrogen peroxide or they have been misinformed about its use.

GRADES OF HYDROGEN PEROXIDE

3% Hydrogen Peroxide (Drug/Grocery Store Variety) - made from 50% Super D Peroxide, Diluted. Contains stabilizers, phenol, acetanilide,
acetanilide, sodium stanate, and tetra sodium phosphate among them.

35% Food Grade Hydrogen Peroxide  - (Also 50% Food Grade Hydrogen Peroxide) Used in food products like cheese, eggs, whey products. Also used to spray inside of foil containers for food storage known as the aseptic packaging system.
Some one-liners of information about hydrogen peroxide:

H2O2 action is similar to insulin—it aids the transport of sugar through the system
.

After the infusion of hydrogen peroxide in therapy, venous blood is the bright, clean red of arterial blood, which carries more oxygen than venous
blood.

Vitamin C in its reaction to inflammation appears to offer benefits through the making of H2O2.  By generating hydrogen peroxide, vitamin C protects against infections.

It appears at this time that hydrogen peroxide may be as vital, or more, as thyroid for the generation of heat. With co-enzyme Q10, H2O2, brings
about a warming of the cells, essential for life.

The hydrogen peroxide, which you find at your drug store, counter is 3%
concentration and is fine for external use, but contains preservatives and
stabilizers which should not be ingested orally. And while we are on this
subject, I would like to encourage you to try a bath in this oxygen-rich
substance. It invigorates. It relieves pain. It stimulates your mind. It
reduces stiffness and soreness like no other treatment. Some might like to
do this early in the day because it can be very invigorating and you won’t
want to go to bed right afterward.   Use 6 fluid ounces of the 35% Food
Grade Hydrogen Peroxide in a bathtub full of rather warm water. Be sure
that the area you have problems with is fully immersed and soak for 20
minutes or more. I have seen joints that are stiff and sore relieved in just a
few baths. Skin problems also respond to this form of use, including
rashes, eczema, psoriasis, athlete’s foot, etc.

PURGING SCHEDULE FOR 35% H2O2
Tolerance levels seem to vary for person using hydrogen peroxide, but
these guidelines seem generally satisfactory.  The drops must be diluted in
water or other liquid, as must all 35% food grade hydrogen peroxide.  It
is preferable to use distilled water for this dilution.

1st day, use 9   drops (03 drops, 3 times a day)

2nd day, use 12 drops (04 drops, 3 times a day)

3rd day, use 15 drops (05 drops, 3 times a day)

4th day, use 18 drops (06 drops, 3 times a day)

5th day, use 21 drops (07 drops, 3 times a day)

6th day, use 24 drops (08 drops, 3 times a day)

7th day, use 27 drops (09 drops, 3 times a day)

8th day, use 30 drops (10 drops, 3 times a day)

9th day, use 36 drops (12drops, 3 times a day)

10 day, use 42 drops (14 drops, 3 times a day)

11 day, use 48 drops (16 drops, 3 times a day)

12 day, use 54 drops (18 drops, 3 times a day)

13 day, use 60 drops (20 drops, 3 times a day)

14 day, use 66 drops (22 drops, 3 times a day)

15 day, use 72 drops (24 drops, 3 times a day)

16 day, use 75 drops (25 drops, 3 times a day)

For more serious problems you may stay at 25 drops, 3 times per day for 1-3 weeks.  Next graduate down to 25 drops, 2 times per day until the problem is taken care of.  This may take from 1-6 months.  Don’t give up!!  When free of problems, you may taper off by taking:

25 drops once every other day – 4 times

25 drops once every third day for 2 weeks

25 drops once every fourth day for 3 weeks

Your body will help you determine proper maintenance.  The drops of hydrogen peroxide may be put into 5 ounces of distilled or spring water, juice or milk.  Fresh pressed carrot juice, bananas that have been blended, carbonated drinks or alcoholic beverage are not compatible.  There is an enzyme in fresh carrot juice and/or bananas that breaks down H2O2into water and oxygen.  When reaching higher amounts of hydrogen
peroxide, more water or juice be taken as needed.  Again

DO NOT INGEST THE PURE DROPS OF 35% FOOD GRADE HYDROGEN PEROXIDE.  The HP “cocktail” taken on an empty stomach or 1 hour before or 3 hours after a meal is generally most beneficial.  If nausea or discomfort develops at any level, you may
stop taking it for a day or two and you can resume at levels that are tolerable.
I started with 4 to 5 drops of the 35% H202 diluted in about 10 oz of water to see if I can handle it. I worked my way up to about 12 drops for every 12 oz of water. I take this at least 2 hours before or after I eat something so that the effects can take effect within 10 minutes.
I have been using this for about 2 months now with no apparent side effects and the results are just amazing. I am a limo driver, so I get very tired at different times of the day. I used to drink one Starbucks coffee and one energy drink a day to keep me going. These types of drinks work for maybe 1-3 hours, and then you feel even more tired.
I started the H202 and felt the effects the same day. I used about 9 drops in a Smart water bottle 32 oz., and drank a 1/3 of it in the morning, more in the afternoon and at night. The whole day, I felt like I had 12 hours of sleep. The feeling wasn't like a coffee buzz or an energy drink buzz. The effects of H202 felt natural and just when you feel in your mind that you think you should be tired, you're not.
Another amazing thing I was learning was that when I want to go to bed, I can fall asleep normally if not better than usual and wake up feeling refreshed and wide awake. I tested the duration of my stamina using H202 and found that when I wake up and drink the H202 throughout the day in a 32 oz bottle of water, I can  stay wide awake all day and go to bed late and get only 3 to 4 hours of sleep and repeat the process with the same results without almost no fatigue throughout the day.
Hydrogen peroxide, or H2O2, also offers promise in developing low-cost, nontoxic rocket fuels. The chemical differs from water only in that it contains two oxygen atoms. It is relatively easy to manufacture – in principle it could be made from water – and it is far less dangerous or expensive than conventional "oxidizers," such as liquid oxygen, which are needed to burn rocket fuels.
"It is actively being studied together with new types of nontoxic propellants made from alcohol that offer promise as alternatives to the conventional petroleum-based rocket fuels," Rusek says.
Engineers hope to have hydrogen-peroxide-based rockets in operation within a decade. But at least one visionary couldn't wait that long. Richard Brown, a British engineer, became the fastest man on two wheels in September, when his Gillette Mach 3 Challenger rocket-powered motorcycle hit 365 miles per hour at the Bonneville Salt Flats.
"All I can say is the G force is absolutely obscene," Brown, 34, told researchers during the hydrogen peroxide conference. The 26-foot-long vehicle was powered by rockets that used hydrogen peroxide as an oxidizer.
Unlike the hydrogen peroxide that is found in drugstores, which is about 97 percent water, the rocket-propulsion variety has just the opposite concentration – 3 percent water and 97 percent hydrogen peroxide – and it has had critical contaminants removed, says Stephen Heister, a professor of aeronautics and astronautics at Purdue.
This purified, concentrated form of H2O2 is then broken down with chemical catalysts, yielding oxygen that combusts with alcohol-based fuels, such as methanol or ethanol, which can be derived from corn. Such a propulsion system would provide an alternative to today's nonrenewable hydrocarbon fuels that are processed from crude oil, Heister says.
In the fuel cells, hydrogen peroxide serves two roles: it is a "catholyte," meaning it is both the electrolyte – a liquid that conducts electricity and allows the reaction to occur – and it is the cathode, or the portion of the battery that attracts electrons. The aluminum serves as the cell's fuel and its anode; as it oxidizes, it gives up electrons. Waste products include water and recyclable chemical compounds.
Serendipity has helped the Purdue researchers overcome a major obstacle in the fuel cell work. Earlier attempts by the U.S. Navy to develop the cells were abandoned because the reaction with aluminum quickly formed a thick sludge that hindered the flow of electricity. However, because the Purdue engineers didn't have pure aluminum for their work, they used an aluminum alloy. To their surprise, they found that the alloy did not form the sludge, Rusek says.
One problem with the experimental cells is that, unlike batteries, they do not immediately provide a steady supply of electricity; it takes about two hours for the cells to reach their peak electrical output before producing a steady current flow, says engineering student Kok Hong Lim, a junior from Singapore who is majoring in aeronautics and astronautics.
Future work will include research aimed at correcting that problem, he says.
Aluminum was chosen originally because it is an abundant natural resource and is readily available from recycled sources, says Rusek, who estimates that the cells are at least 20 times higher in energy density than a standard lead-acid car battery.
"That means a 20-kilogram lead-acid battery would put out the same amount of energy as a one-kilogram hydrogen peroxide fuel cell," he says, noting that other metals, such as lithium alloys, might also work in hydrogen peroxide fuel cells.
Science Daily (Mar. 26, 2007) — Juicing up your cell phone or iPod may take on a whole new meaning in the future. Researchers at Saint Louis University in Missouri have developed a fuel cell battery that runs on virtually any sugar source -- from soft drinks to tree sap -- and has the potential to operate three to four times longer on a single charge than conventional lithium ion batteries, they say.
  • Battery (electricity)
  • Alternative fuel vehicle
  • Biomass
  • Fuel cell
For consumers, that could mean significantly longer time to talk and play music between charges. The new battery, which is also biodegradable, could eventually replace lithium ion batteries in many portable electronic applications, including computers, the scientists say. Their findings were described at the 233rd national meeting of the American Chemical Society.
"This study shows that renewable fuels can be directly employed in batteries at room temperature to lead to more energy-efficient battery technology than metal-based approaches," says study leader Shelley Minteer, Ph.D., an electrochemist at Saint Louis University. "It demonstrates that by bridging biology and chemistry, we can build a better battery that's also cleaner for the environment."
Using sugar for fuel is not a new concept: Sugar in the form of glucose supplies the energy needs of all living things. While nature has figured out how to harness this energy efficiently, scientists only recently have learned how to unleash the energy-dense power of sugar to produce electricity, Minteer says.
A few other researchers also have developed fuel cell batteries that run on sugar, but Minteer claims that her version is the longest-lasting and most powerful of its type to date. As proof of concept, she has used a small prototype of the battery (about the size of a postage stamp) to successfully run a handheld calculator. If the battery continues to show promise during further testing and refinement, it could be ready for commercialization in three to five years, she estimates.
Consumers aren't the only ones who stand to benefit from this new technology. The military is interested in using the sugar battery to charge portable electronic equipment on the battlefield and in emergency situations where access to electricity is limited. These devices include remote sensors for detecting biological and chemical weapons. Devices could be instantly recharged by adding virtually any convenient sugar source, including plant sap, Minteer says.
Like other fuel cells, the sugar battery contains enzymes that convert fuel -- in this case, sugar -- into electricity, leaving behind water as a main byproduct. But unlike other fuel cells, all of the materials used to build the sugar battery are biodegradable.
So far, Minteer has run the batteries on glucose, flat sodas, sweetened drink mixes and tree sap, with promising results. She also tested carbonated beverages, but carbonation appears to weaken the fuel cell. The best fuel source tested so far is ordinary table sugar (sucrose) dissolved in water, she says.
One of the first applications Minteer envisions for the sugar fuel cell is using it as a portable cell phone recharger, similar to the quick rechargers already on the market that allow users to instantly charge their cell phones while 'on the go.' Ideally, these rechargers would contain special cartridges that are pre-filled with a sugar solution. These cartridges then could be replaced when they're used up. Ultimately, she hopes that the sugar battery can be used as a stand-alone battery replacement in a wide range of portable electronic devices.
Future work includes modifying the battery's performance for varying environmental conditions, including high temperatures, and extending the life of the battery, Minteer says. Funding for this study was provided by the U.S. Department of Defense.

Food-grade or Re-agent grade (these are 35% strength and dangerous if undiluted) hydrogen peroxide is better for internal use because the common 3% grade contains small amounts of chemical stabilizers and other impurities.

An alternate dosage regimen provides three drops of 35% H2 O2 in an 8 oz (300 ml) glass of water taken three times a day. This is then increased by one drop per dose per day (3 drops per day) up to a maximum of 25 drops per dose per day (75 drops per day) in extreme cases. Candidiasis cases should start at 1 drop per dose and build up their tolerance gradually. Some find the taste rather bleachy and unpleasant and may wish to chase it with plain water. It can also be mixed with fruit juice - citrus juices, in particular, mask the taste quite well. By adding 7 drops of 35% hydrogen peroxide to a gallon of drinking water and shaking it well, this will purify it well and gives it a pleasant waterfall-like flavour.

Veterinary and Agricultural Applications
Humans are not the only life form that benefits from compensation for their oxygen-deficient air, water and/or lifestyle. Hydrogen peroxide in animals' drinking water, not enough to taste unpleasant, knocks out a growing list of illnesses. a growing number of farmers are applying it to their livestock to cut losses from disease and infected wounds. Plants grow better with an ounce of 3% hydrogen peroxide per quart of water they are given. Spray the solution on their leaves as well. Seeds germinate faster, with bigger sprouts, when they are first soaked in 25g of 3% hydrogen peroxide to 500 ml of water. Instead of cutting trees that are diseased or otherwise struggling, spray them with oxy-water (1 part 3% to 32 parts water)."

Cinnamon is diuretic in nature and helps in secretion and discharge of urine. It is also aphrodisiac and is believed to arouse sexual desire.

Essential Oils
Many essential oils have been found to elevate mood and produce a general sense of relaxation. One study found that nurses who used lavender, for example, had lower levels of stress.

Another benefit to essential oils is that they can be used to boost the immune system. It may come as a surprise that essential oils can "spike" the immune system - several studies seem to indicate that from aromatherapy increase good mood and also white cell blood count which in turn boosts the immune system.

Since essential oils have so many potential benefits, it may even be worth considering how to make essential oils yourself. People have been working with essential oils for thousands of years, and as a result, it should come as no surprise that there are a great many essential oils recipes to be found.
Working with essential oils can make a great hobby that is not only fun, but healthful at the same time. If you are interested in learning more about making essential oils, there are classes and books on the subject. Some of the more popular essential oils are peppermint, eucalyptus, Qaranfal and spearmint.
The basic process is to buy or build a still, which is a device used for distilling. Then harvest and select your plants. These plants should be in whole form ideally. Once you have dried your plants, you can distill them by boiling water and adding your plants into the still. The oil that is left in the still should be drained and placed into a container immediately for storage. And Voila! That is the basic process for making an essential oil at home.

There is indeed an entire science built up around using essential oils. There are several essential oils that are believed to help fight off infections, such as eucalyptus, oregano and cinnamon. There are many people who believe that essential oils can be used to help fight off colds before they even start. Peppermint, like eucalyptus, has been proven effective in clearing the respiratory system. The strong vapor produced the peppermint and eucalyptus is so effective that it is not uncommon to see these two scents together in cold season remedies. Aromatherapists often opt for organically produced essential oils, due to the fact that non-organic essential oils can often have concentrations of pesticides.

Essential oils are also often used to treat problems such as migraines. Obviously migraines are a form of pain; in particular, it is believed that migraines may be caused as blood vessels expand in the head. Thus anything that can reduce inflammation is a valuable tool in fighting migraines. Many migraine drugs are actually designed to reduce inflammation. There are many essential oils that are believed to have anti-inflammatory effects, such as lavender, ginger and chamomile.
Many of us also overlook our sense of smell. However, our sense of smell has been proven to have a powerful effect on our mood and psychology. Considering the fact that there are many diseases and physical problems that have an emotional and mental component, it makes a great deal of sense to count essential oils amount treatment options. The human immune system has been proven to respond when people are in better moods. There is growing evidence that our mood can affect our health and that there is a mind body connection. Essential oils used through aromatherapy seek to address those issues by boosting the immune system, and in the process maybe even preventing serious illness.

Benefits of Cinnamon Oil
Cinnamon oil is obtained from the bark and leaves of cinnamon tree. The benefits of cinnamon oil include the following:

Cooking: Some people add cinnamon oil while cooking. Cinnamon oil obtained from the leaves contains a compound named cinnamaldehyde, which is an excellent flavoring agent.

Room Freshener: The pleasant aroma of cinnamon oil makes it a very effective as a room freshener. It is often added in potpourris.

Eliminating Mosquitoes: Cinnamon oil is a good mosquito repellent. Research has now proved that cinnamon oil is very effective in killing mosquito larvae. Apart from the leaves of cinnamon, its bark is also a good source of cinnamaldehyde, which is an active mosquito killing agent. This research has paved the way for finding an environmentally solution for solving the global menace problem.

Many companies producing cinnamon oil claim that it is a good antibacterial and antifungal agent making it very effective on infections. It also helps in blood circulation and acts as a sexual stimulant. Research has also proved that cinnamon oil obtained from the leaves and twigs of cinnamon can be used for controlling mites in honey bees.

Being strong in nature, cinnamon oil should be avoided for internal consumption. Further, it can have adverse effects on the skin, if used topically in concentrated form and therefore it should be used in diluted form. Moreover before using cinnamon oil, it should be tested if it suits your skin. Hence apply only a small quantity of cinnamon oil initially and check if you get any allergic reaction. Do not apply cinnamon oil on the face and sensitive areas.

Cinnamon Benefits

Cinnamon is a herb traditionally used by many ancient cultures. It is indicated for a variety of ailments including gastrointestinal problems, urinary infections, relieving symptoms of colds and flu and has remarkable anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties. Some studies have shown that Cinnamon helps people with diabetes metabolise sugar better.
Most therapeutic uses of Chinese cinnamon bark are rooted in its historical use as a traditional medicine and on laboratory and animal studies. Test-tube or animal research does not guarantee safety or effectiveness in humans, but German health authorities (Commission E) do approve of cinnamon bark for mild gastrointestinal spasms, stimulating appetite and relieving indigestion.
It is used in flatulent dyspepsia, dyspepsia with nausea, intestinal colic and digestive atony associated with cold & debilitated conditions. It is known to relieve nausea and vomiting, and because of its mild astringency it is particularly used for infantile diarrhea.
Cinnamon warms and stimulates the digestive system, useful in weak digestion, colic, griping, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, wind and distension. The tannins have an astringent action, stemming bleeding in nosebleeds, heavy periods and resolving diarrhea and catarrhal congestion.

Soothe an upset stomach:
Cinnamon extracts have been used medically to treat gastrointestinal problems and to help calm the stomach. Cinnamon is a carminative, an agent that helps break up intestinal gas that has traditionally been used to combat diarrhea and morning sickness. Both test-tube and some animal studies have found that cinnamon may help to relieve mild abdominal discomfort caused by excess gas.

Clear up urinary-tract infections:
One German study showed that Cinnamon "suppresses completely" the cause of most urinary-tract infections (Escherichia coli bacteria) and the fungus responsible for vaginal yeast infections (Candida albicans).

Allow diabetics to use less insulin:
Some studies have shown that Cinnamon helps people with diabetes metabolise sugar better. In adult-onset (Type II) diabetes, the pancreas produces insulin, but the body can't use it efficiently to break down blood sugar.

Cinnamon is also a great source of manganese, fiber, iron, and calcium. As a result, it has been used as an effective home remedy for: So
